5 THINGS YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT BEFORE ADDING A POOL TO YOUR HOME

October 23, 2018

It’s a scorching hot summers day in Adelaide and you’re fantasising about what life might be like if you were fortunate enough to have a blissfully cold pool in your backyard. While the thought may seem enticing, there are a number of important factors you should consider before making that leap.

COST
Installing a pool in your home is incredibly pricey and of course prices may vary depending on the type of pool. There are still additional costs which may well and truly influence your decision. For instance, have you researched the price of pumps, pool filters, accessories and cleaning products? More importantly, the price of your electricity and water bills will be significantly impacted.

SIZE
Be prepared to lose a great amount of space in your backyard to make way for your pool. Also consider the amount of time a pool takes to construct and how long your backyard will be ‘out of bounds’. This could factor into the time you may spend entertaining guests and hosting parties in your home.

SAFETY
Above all else, safety is the most import thing to consider if you are thinking about installing a pool. Especially if you have children or pets, you must install appropriate fencing, fitted with child safety locks. This again will lead to additional costs, however it is vital to prevent drowning hazards.

MAINTENANCE
Owning a pool also requires a great deal of maintenance and up keeping. Of course you could hire a pool cleaner although this equates to more costs. If you prefer to do the maintaining yourself, you’ll have to keep on top of PH levels and alkalinity, whilst also cleaning and topping up chlorine regularly.

INCREASE/DECREASE VALUE OF HOME
Initially, you may assume installing a pool will add significant value to your home. This is not always the case and sometimes the amount of money invested into building a pool will not be returned if you decide to sell. In some cases, buyers may even be deterred from purchasing a home with a pool installed.
